If you’ve partaken of the latest episodes of Bravest Warriors, then you’ve been serenaded by the sweet tunes of one Neil Parfitt, Toronto-based TV composer at large. Notice any video game easter eggs so far? Neil used his real SNES Mario Paint music program to add sickness to the club beatz in episode 407, Beth and Plum’s girl’s night out. His love for Bravest Warriors precedes his employment on the show and comes through in every music cue he creates for it. He has but one (1) wee ask of the Big Bosses in return: please license more characters for Funko Pop! collectibles! 

Was music always a big part of your life? What instruments do you play / used to play?

Absolutely! Growing up, my dad worked in radio and advertising and was always bringing home the latest records, tapes and CDs… am I dating myself yet?! My mom was in advertising and film. Between the two of them, music was a huge, constant element of my childhood—third only to Lego and Nintendo. I started on piano and moved between drums and wind instruments in high school. Baritone sax was the best—although I think one of my arms is permanently longer from lugging that stupid heavy case home to practice. I also played keyboards in a band from grade 8 to 12 with my best friends. These days you could say I play the “mouse”… okay, keyboard is still my primary instrument. And my DAW lets me use any instrument I desire.

Saw your ‘programming music’ science fair project. Did ya win, literally and/or figuratively?

Oh man. So my mom got this computer at a garage sale in 1990—for the Y2K kids, it was an IBM PCjr. A BEASTLY beige piece of junk with no internet and no hard drive! But it did have a cartridge with GWBASIC on it: unique to that computer, it could play 3 voices simultaneously so you could program some terrible, but polyphonic music. My science fair project was how to code music. And nope, I didn’t win, probably because it wasn’t a volcano or some cliché small town crap thing like growing bean sprouts. My mom thought I was a winner. So I didn’t spiral into emo-despair as a teen. Yeaaaaaah!

Mom approval is all that counts. When did you know you wanted a career in music?

Mid-grade 9 was the spark. My music teacher at the time let me do my own thing, like stay after school to play with the synthesizers (an Ensoniq SQ-80) and sequencers that were kicking around underused. So I’d mess around making songs with all that gear, which led to scoring his son’s college short film later in the term… aaaand I was hooked.

Did you go to school to study music, or anythin’ else?

I went to Fanshawe College for Music Industry Arts and studied Music Engineering for 2 years. They really kicked my ass and got me ready for the real world! But my first experience analyzing orchestration came through digesting the scores of 8 and 16-bit era games. On the Super Nintendo system you could go into most game options and pull the background music - I’d dump it onto cassettes and listen to them on a Walkman on my way to school. Neeerrd! 
I also was (am) a huge fan of movie soundtracks. My favourite composers when I was old enough to be aware were Danny Elfman, John Williams, Shirley Walker, Jerry Goldsmith, Brad Fiedel. Michael Kamen and the man… Harold Faltermeyer! I listened to film scores constantly.

How did you break into composing for the film and TV biz?

Out of college, I logged about 90,000 hours a week for a year doing post-audio for commercials. I was burned out, so I quit to re-focus. After quitting work at a gas station - hey I was broke and still only lasted two days - I found out about a 4th degree connection in Nelvana’s music department. I had no idea who they were, but I knew all their shows from watching Saturday Morning Cartoons! The fire was re-lit - I HAD to work there. I called them weekly for almost 7 months. They finally caved and hired me as a Junior Music Editor. I learned the ins and outs of the composing craft, working with all the underscore and editing on nearly 100 episodes across 8 shows. It was great! But a year later Corus bought them, and I was phased out of a job in the transition. I did my own thing, then in 2004 Corus called me to pitch on some shows and I started winning some contracts, the two biggest being Bakugan and Beyblade. Those kept me busy for many years and hundreds of episodes each. I have to throw a shout-out to Nelvana’s Supervising Music Producer Mike Northcott; he took a chance on me all those years ago. Man, I sound like a bumbling old man… I’m 38!

What have been your favorite projects to work on and why?

This is a trap question, right? Bravest Warriors for sure! It genuinely makes me laugh, a lot - and if you’re laughing while working, that energy makes its way into the music. Last week I made a death metal track, and for 3 seconds of screen-time, I spent hours coming up with the riffs, programming the drums, hiring out guitars and recording my own vocals. I’m having a blast: I never know what the next episode will bring. 
Second is Beyblade. It was an extremely challenging show as I was working directly with Japanese production. I had translators and everything… EXCEPT PICTURE! I’d get endless lists of music requests with a brief description and the number of seconds required, like, “Image of courage bursting through heart of dragon: 120 seconds”. All notes were translated from Japanese—lots of humorous confusion. I was literally writing blind. The Music Supervisor at Nelvana, Norm Beaver (who’s also my Bossman on Bravest) saved my life as the client liaison. I seriously don’t know how else I’d have made it through!

What are your must haves for a day of composing?

Cheesy as it sounds, there’s only one: inspiration. If I’m uninspired, I won’t be happy with my results and I’ll have to revisit cues later. Obviously, you can’t force inspiration if you’re feeling the moop. So I’ll go clear my head. My living room is full of toys and random fun things. I’ll boop my cat’s nose, throw on some old Nintendo to hear some Koji Kondo music. That kicks me into gear! That, or hopping on my motorcycle for an hour. Both are great to ‘reset’.

What is your favorite kind of music to compose vs. listen to as a fan?

Bravest music, because I get to mash my favourites: orchestral, chiptunes and 80’s synths. I can push it over the top and make it ridiculous. My favourite cue of the show so far is on episode 4.04: EIGHTIES-TO-THE-MAX-CHALLENGE-MONTAGE. I threw everything in there. Wanky guitar, reverse piano, simmons toms, cheese horns. Nothing was sacred - muahahah! As a fan, I’m a synth-head so I love Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Portishead, Metric and newer synthwave bands like Gunship. But I listen to everything.

What is your creative process when composing music for Bravest?

On BW, I work with near-final animation. Which is great, because I’m never at a loss of what’s happening in the action and movement. We “spot” each episode at Nelvana: Adrian Thatcher (Director), Simon Berry (Music Editor), Ryan Araki (Post Audio Supervisor), Norm Beaver (Music Supervisor) and myself get together to decide on all the moments that should be supported by score. My mantra for Bravest is that the music has to be fun, with nostalgic retro elements giving kudos to many different genres; but most importantly, the emotional support should feel genuine and not “tele-play” or “phone it home” like a lame sitcom. Adrian is great to work with: he’s very specific on emotional support, yet lets me ‘do my thing’ when it comes to the ‘sound’ of a cue.
After spotting, I’ll take the notes back to my studio and dive in. It’s here where I decide if I want to go orchestral, synths, chiptunes or a hybrid of everything. Honestly, there’s no rules nor set way of going about this. Sometimes I’ll sketch out the music on a piano and the final will have no acoustic instruments at all—or vice-versa. Other times, I’ll sit there fiddling with sounds on my synthesizers,  and before you know it, a sound will snowball into a completed piece! We then meet up twice more to accommodate notes from Adrian and Frederator, and it’s out out the door to VRV… and…. repeat! Episodes overlap, so I stay busy.

You post behind the scenes videos to Instagram- what advice do you have for folks who want to do like you?

I love posting those ‘behind the scenes’ vids and stuff where I’m messing around with tech and synths because I want people to know you can have fun in this business, even with the stress and crazy deadlines. I also teach night school at a local college a few evenings a week: ProTools for Music Production and MIDI Programming & Synthesis. Honestly, I don’t need that work; I just enjoy it. I want to pass along knowledge and help people use these tools to their full potential. A lot of these resources weren’t there when I was starting out - it was just word of mouth and trade magazines. 
The internet is great resource, but not a be-all-end-all… there’s a lot of misinformation out there. Getting practical hands-on experience with real-world feedback is tremendous. With the tools available today, anyone can dive into composing without spending a small fortune. Like with anything else, you have to be driven and persistent. And finding a mentor is hugely important! I’ve been in the business since 2000, and my “Big Three” mentors have been composers John Welsman, Lesley Barber and Andrew Lockington. All legends in Canadian composing lore. I’ve learned a ton working with each on countless shows and films. Ask a composer in your city out for lunch; see if you can be an asset to them, or even a fly on the wall during a session. It’s all invaluable experience. And keep researching, keep learning—I’m always in brain-sponge-mode!

What do you love most about Bravest Warriors?

Catbug!!!!! Plum. Danny. That’s a hard one! I really like the humor. It’s like the show was specifically designed for my brain. Also, how the hell does Benjamin Townsend come up with such golden catchphrases and wordplay? It’s magic!

What are your favorite cartoons?

Uh oh! Is this a trap question again? In addition to Bravest Warriors, I love South Park, Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, The Maxx, Hartman era Simpsons, Mr. Pickles, Tron: Uprising, Archer, Batman: The Animated Series, Metalocalypse, Robot Chicken and I have a huge soft spot for Happy Tree Friends… Lumpy is the best!

What is your Dream Project to compose on, if you have one?

I’d love to score an animated feature with orchestra. That’s the dream! But honestly, Bravest Warriors is a dream gig, and I’m not greasing the wheel. I was a BW fan well before I even knew this opportunity existed so it’s been an awesome experience. Basically, I get to work on fun music, in stylistics I love, laugh and get paid to do it! Sweeeeeet!

Our latest limited edition postcard gives me the excuse to continue the march down memory lane.

2005

Welcome to Frederator, Kevin Kolde.

2005 was destined to be one of Frederator’s most pivotal years. We were soaring full speed ahead on original cartoon productions and at the same time expanding to become a full-fledged media brand of our own. In part, it was because of our collective ambitions. Or just maybe it was my paranoia that our exclusive television partner, Nickelodeon, was getting sick of us. 

Oh Yeah! Cartoons had been such a success –in sheer numbers the largest TV animation development showcase ever, with 99 short films and three hit series– Nick had gone ahead given us a greenlight to find more new creators for more cartoons that could become more series. And we were well on our way, with Eric Homan and Kevin Kolde in our Burbank studio seeing hundreds of pitches on our way to a series of 39 new shorts.

But probably the biggest news was the launch of our own network, though not in the sense that most television professionals understood. High speed broadband internet was making all sorts of crazy things possible.

The World’s Original Cartoon Podcast

Eric Homan and I were looking for ways of meeting more filmmakers, especially outside of the Los Angeles and New York, areas where we were based. Making a long story short, I asked our former intern, 19 year old computer engineer David Karp, to build us a website showcase for global animators’ short films that were previously relegated to film festivals, based on Dan Harmon’s original Channel 101 and it’s New York sister Channel 102. Instead, he convinced me that those presentations were hopelessly old fashioned and that we should present films that could be distributed as a video podcast on Apple’s iTunes in advance of an iPod that could actually show videos. Now, that’s a revolution.

Channel Frederator launched on November 2, 2005, and our early entry into the internet video sweepstakes gave us some incredible advantages. As it turned out –luck piled upon luck– the Video iPod was announced a couple of weeks before and we were among the few places where users could get quality video for their machines. Within a month we not only had 1000 animated films submitted to our inboxes, and over 1 million downloads of four video podcast episodes, but Steve Jobs kept featuring our high quality podcast in live Apple presentations of the Video iPod.

Our newest era had begun.

That seems to be a trend in cartoons: more nice characters and positive friendships.

It’s another impact I see from Pen Ward. He introduced a lot of heartfelt positivity to cartoons. Before Adventure Time, there was a lot of silliness, but there wasn’t much kindness. Pen showed that it doesn’t hurt to show happiness. And Bravest Warriors has a lot of that heart too, even with the darker threads, like Jellykid’s apparent hatred of the Warriors and Impossibear’s overall problematic relationships.

Benjamin Townsend: The Frederator Interview

Benjamin Townsend has written on about a million animated shows and was Story Editor (Head Writer in Charge) and Executive Producer on Bravest Warriors Season 4. He won an Emmy for his work on I Got A Rocket, but he says that it’s chill because everyone in animation has one (mine must be lost in the mail). I sat down with Benjamin to talk Bravest Warriors secrets, how to become an animation writer (step one: knit in public), and revolutionary kindness in cartoons.

How did you break into the cartoon biz?

After graduating uni in the UK, I came to the US on holiday and… decided to stay. About two weeks after I arrived, I met an animation writer at a coffee shop, completely by chance.

How did this ‘chance meeting’ come about?

I was knitting. He approached me and said, “You’re knitting,” so we struck up a conversation. He was teaching an extension course at UCLA on Writing for Animation and invited me to audit (read: “sneak into”) the class. After a few weeks, his agent was looking for an assistant and he recommended me. So I went to work at The Gotham Group, which at the time was a newer agency and much smaller than it is now (note: Gotham is now a premier management company).

Do you recommend starting out at an agency or management company?

Absolutely, because so much of this business is who you know. Point in case, The Gotham Group has managed me for 20 years now. Working as an assistant, I met a whole bunch of people who I’d continue to work with for years to come. It’s a very small industry in that way.

Where did you go after working as an assistant at Gotham?

I put in a few years at Gotham who then connected me with Fox Kids as assistant to a VP of Development. It was an extremely fun time to work there:  X-Men, Power Rangers, TMNT - billion dollar franchises. I learned a lot in development that helped me become a writer: how projects are developed, how notes are given, what makes an effective bible, etc.. I also met a lot of writers, which led to my first writing job. The story editor on one of our shows gave me the chance to write an episode. Then another. After a few more, I was able to become a freelance writer full time.

Why do you think he gave you a script - what do story editors look for in baby writers?

They want someone intelligent who they can work with. It’s really that simple. Nice, smart, and dependable. The technical aspects of writing are less important at the beginning, because most can be taught and corrected. So it’s really about having a good personality, a sense of humor, and instincts for story. The nuts and bolts come in the process.

What do young writers need to know about writing for animation specifically?

Animation writing has a visual component to its storytelling that you don’t see in live action. In script-driven shows, the writer is responsible for a lot of the work traditionally done by the board artist. You have to be aware of the camera, the acting, the non-dialogue humor. Often, I read scripts that are focused almost exclusively on tone, characters sitting around ‘being themselves’. But in a scripted show stuff has to happen on the page or it won’t be on the screen.

What are the most important aspects of being a story editor?

Story editors keep continuity. They manage the writers and ensure that the show maintains a level of consistency from episode to episode. If a story isn’t working or something isn’t funny, they are the ones who work with the writer to get it back on track.

As an SE, how does working in a writer’s room vs. with freelance writers differ?

Writer’s rooms for animation are actually a fairly new phenomenon. But in a room, you’re assured that everyone knows the show and is on the same page, and you break the story together. Working with freelancers, there are times when writers don’t know the show as well as they should (not Bravest Warriors writers, obviously), which makes an SE’s job harder. And breaking story is a one-on-one meeting where they pitch an episode idea and if you OK it, you sit down together - or hop on a video chat - to find the story beats.

What do you like best about being a story editor?

Working with funny writers. It’s awesome when a writer makes you laugh or comes up with a great idea you’d never have thought of. Every person’s way of telling a story is different. The hard part for an SE is getting out of the writer’s way: allowing them to use their own voices, while maintaining the voice of the show. It’s a careful balance.

What is your advice to writers trying to break in?

Be distinctive. Have your own voice. It used to be all about how well you can mimic the voice of a show, and while that still matters, there’s more emphasis placed now on what writers can bring to the show individually. In the long run it’s easier to write in your own voice anyway, so develop it. Tell the stories that you want to see onscreen. And don’t emulate whatever is popular, just enjoy what you enjoy. Read a lot, watch a lot, don’t fake it - let your voice authentically reflect who you are.

How do you think that shift has come about, to emphasize unique voices?

I’ve seen it through the influence of creators like Pendleton Ward, Genndy Tartakovsky, Craig McCracken: this move toward artist-driven, board-driven shows that could only be made with that one singular voice guiding the vision. The downside is that the creative process for such shows tends to be slower, and in this age of content, the infrastructure of producers, writers, and a story editor is crucial to getting things on air quickly.

You’re also a producer - how does that compare to writing?

With writing, it’s just you and a script. But producing is all about collaboration. Other minds and visions enter the mix, and you lose the total control of it being just you and the page. It can be challenging to see what you had envisioned change, but producing requires compromise. And anyway, collaboration is integral to making TV and it’s better for it in the long run. The best scenario is when an actor takes your line and makes it so much funnier than it was in your head; or when a board artist adds the perfect visual quirk to enhance a moment.

What is your favorite show you’ve written on?

Bravest Warriors of course.

Naturally. But how ‘bout besides Bravest?

I’ve enjoyed working on shows with legacies. Avengers, TMNT, Scooby Doo. On TMNT, Kevin Eastman was directly involved and we were relying heavily on the comics, so the stories were weighty with tradition. And in Mystery Inc., I was part of taking Scooby Doo - a concept with an astonishing legacy - in a new direction. That was fantastic: giving the show darker overtones, aging it up, developing the characters in ways that were unheard of before.

How was it taking the helm of Bravest Warriors for Season 4?

It’s an excellent show—which in itself poses a challenge. Coming in at the 4th season, I had no control over the show’s voice because it long preceded me. Adopting the voice of someone else is always tricky. You have to accept that you’re not that person, and the stories that you tell will be different than those they would. But there’s also the fun of coming into an established world of great characters and getting to play with them in your own way.

What do you like best about Bravest Warriors?

I love its older sensibility. It reflects a darker side than most cartoons for kids. And I like that it’s about teenagers with all their emotional complexity and messiness.

How was your approach to Bravest Warriors specific to you?

I think my interests skew a little differently from the norm. Had they hired someone fanatical about Star Trek and Star Wars, season 4 would have probably been quite like Star Trek or Star Wars. But the focus of the show is four hormonal teenagers in space, so being a fan of teen properties - Dawson’s Creek, Heathers, Felicity, The Hills (I’ll admit to watching the hell out of Pitch Perfect) - allowed the characters to stay in the forefront. I love that in teen shows everything is so dreadfully important—because when you’re that age, it is. When you’re young, the world is a backdrop to your life. As you grow older, your life moves into the background, and the world becomes more important.

Without spoilers… what can you say about the end of Season 4?

I left season 4 with places to go. There are still so many stories to tell, because the show is structured so that you can tell any story. It plays on tropes and inverts them; the characters can only evolve a certain amount, but the world is so big, you’re not going to see the same story twice.

This season Bravest became a Canadian co-production - how was working with the Toronto-based team at Nelvana? 

Partnering with Nelvana for Season 4 meant the entire animation process moved to Canada. This throws up a lot of challenges creatively - it’s much easier to be able to comment on designs as they’re being sketched, or be called over to say how you imagined a joke being played out as it’s getting boarded. And it puts a lot more weight on the script itself, requiring you to solve as many problems as you can in the writing. But Bravest Warriors has built up a lot of good will and the team Adrian Thatcher (our director) put together were all fans of the first three seasons and that really comes across. I think they felt as fortunate as I did to be working with the property and you can see that excitement in the animation and the music.

Did adjustments have to be made to ready Bravest for broadcast TV in Canada?

You’d think so, but no, not really. A few words were nixed, but not that many. What’s good is that the show is never uncomfortable or difficult for children to understand. The concept didn’t have to change for broadcast, because really, these are nice teenagers. They’re motivated by love and friendship.

What do you love most about each BW?

I love that Danny is born to suffer. He has happy moments, but he had a rough start. Wallow is outrageously optimistic. He finds tragic things funny, which is pretty beautiful. Chris is obligated to live up to this hot, blonde, white male hero that he never asked to be. I like how that sci-fi archetype contradicts the sensitive guy he actually is. And for Beth: she lives so responsibly. She’s clear-headed and takes initiative, but she’s plagued by these teenage emotions that she doesn’t have any use for.

What do you see as the core theme of the show?

It’s love, for sure: romantic love, love for their parents, and overwhelmingly love for each other as friends. And of course it’s also about why loving someone sometimes means that you have to murk them.

Were you told all of the ~mysteries and secrets~ when the show passed to your hands?

I was told a few things, and I honored them. Questions like, “What’s the Emotion Lord about? Who is the Concierge? Is Chris meant to be with Beth or Plum?” All these will all be answered by the end of the season.

What’s been special about working on the show?

Truthfully, I’ll never have this freedom as a writer again. “I’m going to kill myself so hard”—where else will I get to write a line like that?! And the show is special because it’s very much a Frederator show, meaning Eric Homan (VP Development), Kevin Kolde (VP Production) and Kelsey Calaitges (Writer, Writer’s Assistant & Dev. Manager) are hugely important to it. It has Frederator’s unique sensibility, and they care about the property and what it’s achieved. They care about its integrity. That shows.

Last up: what is your favorite cartoon?

My favorite cartoon is Cowboy Bebop. There’s an episode that I can’t watch because it just wrecks me for days after. Brutal.
